What is Oil?
Oil comes from the deep underground. Oil is made up of decomposed remains of living things over a long, long period of time. The theory is that corpses of microscopic marine organisms continued to pile up on the seabed. They kept getting buried deeper and deeper by stuff building up on top. Then over millions of years, with pressure and heat, the remains were transformed into liquid oil and gas. The oil seeped through the rocks and then collected in pockets also known as traps. These traps is where oil rigs try to drill today.
Oil is also known as petroleum. Petroleum is made up of oil and gas together. Petroleum is usually liquid and is dark and oily. It can also be a solid and a gas. When it is solid it is called asphalt. Oil is actually a mixture of chemicals. This is why oil can be used to make so many different things.
